The storm within

Sitting on the window sill, she looked out at the vast expanse of sea
The waves lapping up the shore brought back dark memories

All hell let loose, the angry waters she saw taking her loved ones deep into the sea
Orphaned for life, lonely and lost, helpless and scared was she

Days turned to months, months to years the scar within ever green
Till that day he came, soft touch smoothed the scars within

Something snapped within her, she felt her heart begin to heal

The storm within now tamed and quiet, she felt at peace with the sea

Dilemma

She couldn't believe it. Fifteen long years she had waited for this. She dialed Rajeev then cut it, deciding to break the news over some sweets. Picking up her bags she headed for the halwai’s. “Gulab jamun for dadi and papa, peda for Rajeev and ma, rasagolla for Priya…” Suddenly she went cold.

The thought of Priya her adopted daughter, sent a shiver down her spine. Caressing her tummy, she asked the little one growing within, “How do I tell her about you? Will she understand? You know I will always love her. She is my dearest, my first one.”

Jealousy ?

Drenched in morning dew I looked heavenly. Each part of me cried with joy. I was the chosen one. I looked at the others with disdain. Was there a hint of jealousy in their eyes? A drop of water from a tree overhead fell on me. Ah! Shedding tears for love unrequited I thought to myself and smiled.

I was presented to a beautiful lady who handed me to the man behind. Not long after, I was in a stinking garbage dump. I cried. Had I looked back I would have seen the others pity me. They knew I was doomed.

Determination

“Mom, leave it to me. I’ll handle it.” That was my girl of seven.

“So you think you know it all?” I asked wrinkling my forehead.

“Yes. But if I win that chocolate in the fridge is mine.”

I agreed. Just then my husband came. She declared, “Dad, you quit smoking or I go on hunger strike.”

He laughed and left. She stuck to her word skipping breakfast and lunch. Her favourite pastries lay there before her yet, she did not touch them.

The father in him yielding, he declared “I quit.”

“Promise”

“Yes”

She won. The chocolate was hers.

The final verdict

I sat there all alone in my favourite corner of 15 years, looking at the newly painted wall with desolate eyes.  These 15 years I had brought a smile to their lips.  But, since the past few months I was often sick. The Doctor had attended. But just two days back the final verdict was pronounced. I knew it was my last day here.

I wondered what was in store for me. Whether I would live through another or would end up as scrap. They were getting ready to throw me out and bring in a brand new Sony Bravia.
